The Mark T. Sheehan High School in Wallingford, Connecticut was closed through Wednesday, November 7, 2012, due to a damaged roof as a result of Hurricane Sandy.
Last week’s super-storm blew off part of the roof at the Connecticut high school. School officials have reported that asbestos tiles on the second floor of the school-building sustained serious damages. This may pose a risk of personal injury from asbestos exposure.
The school closing is prompted by the concern for the safety of students and staff as a result of the damage to the asbestos-containing tiles. The school has brought in environmental hygienists and asbestos removal professionals to assess the damage and remove the tiles that pose an asbestos exposure threat to student safety.
The school’s roof and asbestos-related problems come just two months after the school completed a $7.6 million project to replace the roof and certain asbestos tiles.
