Best-Tec Asbestos Abatement, an asbestos removal contractor from Boynton Beach, Florida, has been cited and fined by the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (“OSHA”). The OSHA fine was for a personal injury incident in which one of the company’s workers was electrocuted.
Juan Arias, an employee of Best-Tec, was performing preparatory work for asbestos removal at the Palm Beach Mall, when he came into contact with an energized electoral conduit. Arias suffered a fatal electric shock, before falling no less than 15 feet from his scaffolding to the ground. The Medical Examiner’s Office has issued a statement that Arias was likely dead before he struck the ground, and listed electrocution as the cause of his death.
After a full investigation of the personal injury incident, OSHA has issued citations and fined Best-Tec $10,780. The citations and fines are for failing to properly train its workers in dealing with electrical circuits, and for exposing its workers to obvious electrocution hazards. Best-Tec’s president has suggested that the company strongly disagrees with OSHA’s findings and will appeal the citations and fine to the U.S. Occupational Safety & Health Review Commission.
At this point, Best-Tec has almost completed its removal of asbestos at the Palm Beach Mall.
