Mesothelioma is an especially dangerous type of cancer. It can take decades to develop but kills about 90% of victims who contract the disease within five years of being diagnosed. Mesothelioma sufferers can make compensation claims against a liable employer, but the process can be complex. That is why anyone who has been exposed to asbestos should turn to an experienced asbestos personal injury attorney expert here at our Boston, Massachusetts law firm to help guide them through the inherently difficult litigation process.
A woman with cancer caused by asbestos exposure is having life-saving private treatment in what has been called a “first-of-its-kind” settlement. Pamela Stubberfield, 74 years-old, doesn’t believe she would still be alive without the drugs being paid for by her ex-employer.
While working for her ex-employer, Mrs. Stubberfield was exposed to asbestos in the early 1960s and diagnosed with mesothelioma in 2016. She had been working as a laboratory technician for three weeks after leaving school when she came into contact with asbestos. Although she believed she had been exposed, she thought since it had been a fairly brief exposure, she was lucky enough not to have been infected.
Mrs. Stubberfield’s case is unique because it was the first time an insurer agreed to pay directly for treatment indefinitely, providing it was appropriate. She is being treated with an immunotherapy drug called Pembrolizumab that is not regularly available to mesothelioma patients. Her doctor, Dr. Peter Szlosarek, said the drug was a “game changer” for certain patients and worked effectively by interfering with signals from tumor cells which stop the body from attacking them. Without it, Dr. Szlosarek said the cancer could have killed her within four to six months of diagnosis in September 2016.
The plaintiff was represented in her mesothelioma case by Andrew Morgan, a partner at the European law firm of Fieldfisher.
