Total Dismantling and Carting Services, Inc. (“Total”), a demolition company based in Swampscott, MA, has been fined $100,000 by a Suffolk Superior Court judge for Massachusetts asbestos violations.
According to court documents, Total improperly removed and disposed of asbestos at several of its work sites in 2008, potentially exposing hundreds of Massachusetts residents to asbestos-related injuries and diseases.
The ruling, handed down on November 29, 2012, requires the company to pay $50,000 of the penalty over the next several years, but allows the company to avoid the remaining $50,000 fine by meeting the requirements of the court order and avoiding further violations.
The case against Total was prosecuted by the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office, with the assistance of lawyers from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection.
