The Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, New York has sent letters to patients informing them that they may have been exposed to asbestos during their care at the facility.
According to the letter, written by medical director Raymond Mayewski, patients that were recently treated in the rehabilitation unit at the hospital may have been briefly exposed to asbestos. The asbestos was later discovered on drywall and other surfaces in a nearby demolition area within the hospital.
Mayewski offered his sincerest apologies to those who may have been affected, but insists that the potential exposure was extremely short in duration. The director also assured patients that improvements to the hospital’s asbestos protocols will be forthcoming.
Asbestos survey paperwork uncovered by a local news channel indicated that the asbestos levels in the area rose to as high as 12% of tested material.
