Asbestos was a highly common component product used in manufacturing in the twentieth century. It was cheap, readily available, and also was praised for its insulation abilities and durability. But what was once thought to be good turned out to be very bad; in fact, after decades of frequent use, we learned of the severely harmful effects of inhaling asbestos dust and spores.  Now, while asbestos is no longer regularly used, its harmful effects are still being felt by many.

Ivo John Peracia worked for New York-area contractors removing asbestos insulation from boilers, pumps, and other equipment for nearly a decade. Peracia died from complications related to mesothelioma, which can often arise from asbestos spore exposure.

Before his death, Peracia filed a lawsuit against the manufacturer of the asbestos products he worked with, the Crane Co., which is a Stamford, CT based company. The suit, filed by attorneys from Weitz & Luxenberg, alleged that Crane Co. failed to adquatly warn Peracia of any of the dangers associated with asbestos exposure, directly leading to his cancer. The jury eventually found Crane liable for Peracia’s injuries, and arrived at a verdict requiring Crane to pay $35 million for medical expenses, pain and suffering, and for his wrongful death.
