School Board Approves Removal of Asbestos from Schools in Sioux City, Iowa.

The Sioux City, Iowa school board voted on Monday, September 10, 2012 to approve the removal of asbestos from area schools.

The project approved by the school board includes the removal of asbestos from the Hoover Middle School, the Washington Elementary School, and six homes adjacent to those properties. Asbestos was used in each of the buildings as a fire retardant.

The buildings are scheduled to be demolished next year to make room for the construction of two new elementary schools.

The improper removal of asbestos can cause serious health issues. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, improper removal can cause fibers of the material to become airborne, and these airborne particles can then pose a serious health risk to those who come into contact with them.
