The principal at the Concord Middle School ordered the project to install new boilers to be temporarily suspended after asbestos removal work was not made known to the school community.
In May 2012, the Concord Middle School in Concord, Massachusetts began the process of removing an old boiler and installing a new one in its place. This process involved preliminary work of removing asbestos from the boiler room.
Asbestos removal had gone on for two weekdays before the teachers and other staff in the school were notified that asbestos was being removed from the premises. In schools, asbestos abatement is generally performed on the weekends or during summer to minimize the risk of harm to teachers and students. The principal apologized for the lack of communication from the administration.
The asbestos removal does not appear to have caused any asbestos fibers to become airborne, and a licensed asbestos hygienist hired by the school monitored the asbestos removal.
