Hardly anyone disputes that science and technology have made incredible advances in recent decades. In spite of numerous medical remedies and discoveries, however, we have not yet found a cure for cancer. This terrible disease—regrettably—continues to weigh heavily on the hearts and minds of people across America. Loved ones are lost every day and lives are turned upside down. In the worst cases, family members do not realize that their fate is sealed until it is too late. By then, the cancer has spread, has already caused substantial damage, and cannot be counteracted by any medical means that we yet have access to.
One particularly deadly type of cancer, named mesothelioma, is caused by prolonged exposure to asbestos. Asbestos is a mineral that occurs naturally in metamorphic and igneous rocks. In the 19th and 20th Centuries, it was used as fireproofing and insulating material in commercial and residential buildings. Although this was then the primary use of asbestos, it also was used in the automotive industry, particularly in brake pads.
Gordon Bankhead, now 66 years old, used to work as a heavy-duty mechanic at the Sea-Land Shipping Company in Oakland, California. From 1965 to 1999, he regularly handled brakes, and was present for their inspection, replacement, grinding and blowing out. After his retirement, Mr. Bankhead developed an incurable case of mesothelioma. He then made a tragic discovery. The brake pads which he had worked on so closely contained deadly asbestos fibers. The brakes were provided by other companies, including ArvinMeritor, Carlisle and Pneumo Abex.
As a result, Mr. Bankhead filed an asbestos lawsuit against those three suppliers for his pain and suffering and his disease. Later, Mr. Bankhead was awarded more than $17 million in personal injury damages. Plaintiffs were represented by attorney Joseph Satterley.
Although plaintiffs like Mr. Bankhead can find financial relief in damage awards such as this one, there is no physical remedy for mesothelioma and many other asbestos related injuries. The harm done by asbestos can last a lifetime. That is why it is so important to hold parties accountable for their actions in exposing people to the danger. If you or a loved one have been harmed by asbestos, you may be entitled to substantial monetary damages. Please contact our Boston law office, 24/7.
